We pray this letter finds you and your family safe and healthy. As mentioned over the past two months, we certainly are in unprecedented times. We are so proud of our administrators’ leadership, our teachers’ innovative thinking, and our families’ continued support and feedback - these truly exemplify the power of teamwork. As we journey through this global pandemic, we continue to reflect and adjust our division assessment practices to meet the ongoing needs of our students. With this in mind, we will be adjusting our middle school term weightings. Term 1 and 2 will each be worth 40% of the student’s final grade and Term 3 (which represents their digital learning) will now be weighted at 20%.
The reduction of weighting for Term 3 takes into account the external factors affecting student learning and teacher instruction. At the beginning of the year, teaching-at-a-distance was never in the plans for any of us: students, parents or teachers. While some are succeeding in this new learning environment, others are struggling. If students experiencing difficulty were in a traditional classroom, a myriad of supports would be implemented to help them - supports less easily accessible in the online classroom. This is the primary reason for the weighting changes. We are dealing with factors that are beyond our control and we want to avoid allowing those factors to inhibit our ability to properly assess students' understanding of the curriculum.
With two months remaining in the school year, we encourage you to continue to reach out to your school communities for support with distance learning. Teachers and administrators are just an email or phone call away to provide you with clarification and guidance on how to best move through these unfamiliar times.
